Important Words during the French Revolution

Definitions:

1. Suffrage - the right to vote. 

2. Reign of Terror - September 1793 to July 1794

3. Guillotine - a falling blade that extinguishes lives immediately. 

4. Marie Antoinette - Austrian born French Queen. She was ridiculed by the common people because she had lavish diamonds and wealth. On the other hand, the common people were at risk of starvation while she bought jewels. 

5. Declaration of the Rights of Man - All men were born free and equal in rights. Equal rights to hold office. 

6. Olympe de Gouges - she wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Women and the Female Citizen.

7. 3 Estates - at the top was the church, 2nd Nobles and 3rd Common People

8. Bourgeoisie - Middle Class - part of the third estate. 

Republic - a government ruled by representatives instead of a monarch.
